Owner, Driving Instructor & Instructor Trainer
Before becoming a instructor I was a Civil Servant and then a Senior Operations Manager in Banking. Although I enjoyed my role in banking, the birth of my children made me look at my life differently. I needed more flexibility as I was missing out on too many important life events! So over 10 Years ago I re evaluated my life, left the bank and took a leap and became an Instructor. During this time I undertook additional training and became an instructor trainer, then in 2016 when the boys were older, more independent and less demanding I decided to set up Driving School Wirral. I love teaching people to drive as it gives them more options in terms of work, freedom to see friends, family, and have a more varied and active social life. Becoming an instructor trainer I have been able to the change lives of the instructors who can now have both greater standard of living and a greater work life balance!
I began my career with the civil service in 1979, it was only meant to be a temporary job whilst I worked out what I wanted to do with my life! In 1995 I met Carol whilst we were both working for the department. I undertook numerous roles within the department untill I took early retirement in 2015 to spend more time at home supporting the boys with their studies and enabling Carol to expand the business. I continue to support the boys with their studies and undertake all of the operational support and administration that is involved with running the business.
I have spent my working life in teaching and retail but I had always wanted to become a driving instructor. I really wanted the flexibility of being self employed and to help people gain the freedom and independence that driving brings. I had helped my brothers, partner and daughter to drive, however there was always work and family life stopping me. Carol and I had spoken for years about me undertaking the training (we have known each other for many years outside the world of work). However during my 3rd pregnancy I decided I had to change my life and with the support of my partner Tim and Carol I did it! I love the flexibility of this job and the work life balance. I love being an instructor, the reward of seeing people gain freedom from public transport, improve their flexibility and improve their job prospects is fantastic.
I was the youngest female driving instructor in the uk when I qualified and to date I still am. I completed my A levels and went into Retail, I loved the job but always felt there was something missing and resented the restricted hours and lack of any real job prospects and security unless I stayed in retail for many more years and followed the traditional career path. This was also considered an unusual career choice by my family because everyone in my family is involved in teaching! So after a few years I decided I wanted and needed a change and made the decision to become an instructor, so after all I have followed in the family footsteps and entered the world of driver education. I contacted my old driving instructor and he put me in touch with Carol and I have never looked back. I have a great work life balance and love teaching people to become safe drivers for life.
After a career in the civil service I decided it was time for a change when the department was being re structured yet again! I spent a long time looking into the role of an instructor and deciding who to train with and become part of that team after I qualified. It was a daunting process and I visited many companies when deciding who to train with and work with post qualification but once once I met Carol I knew Driving School Wirral was were I needed to be. I am committed to teaching people to become safe drivers for life, not on how to pass a test. With the team work, ongoing support and personal development we undertake across the year all instructors work together to ensure the highest standards are achieved and maintained. I love the satisfaction of the test day and everyone’s face when they are handed a pass certificate.
I ran my own business for many years but with elderly and aging parents in poor health, children doing GCSE, A levels and then off to university I decided I needed to take a step back and I re evaluated my life. So I sold my business to concentrate on the family. During this time I met Carol, we choose her to teach my children as almost everyone we knew who had teenage children had been taught by either her or her team and she came highly recommended. I could see how flexible the role of an instructor could be with my family and I could see the passion and satisfaction that came with the rewards of creating safe drivers for life. So I took the leap and began my new life as a driving instructor, I have loved every minute of my time to date and I look forward to helping so many people gain the freedom and flexibility having a driving licence brings.

After spending many years in the Civil Service and then the Security Industry I decided I wanted a change in career. I wanted more flexibility, more family time and to feel like I was make a difference to people and their lives. A family friend was already an instructor with Driving School Wirral and every time I spoke to her I realised what I was missing and how I could improve my work life balance and do something rewarding too. I met Carol and we discussed becoming a driving Instructor, I knew then that this was to be the best decision I was ever going to make. I love teaching people to drive and share the experience with them, watching them gain their confidence, then their freedom and independence. This is the most rewarding thing I have done throughout my career and I look forward to many more years of being a driving instructor.
Before becoming a driving instructor I was working in retail, I had many great years in a variety of roles and in different companies. I really enjoyed the roles as I love meeting and helping people, but I did not have the flexibility I needed with a young family. After my partner Jayne had become a driving instructor with Carol and seeing how she really enjoyed it I decided that it was something I would like to do myself and haven’t looked back. It has been a great move and I am very proud to be part of the team.
My career began in the Civil Service working in Training where I learnt how the impact of change and learning new skills can make people feel. I realised the learning experience could be uncomfortable and usually came from an earlier experience. I moved into teaching working with children with specific learning needs to help promote an early positive learning experience. I learnt the value of how others learn and how to overcome barriers. In fact, there are no barriers just different ways to look at things. My instructor training came after realising I was a nervous driver and that my daughters were reluctant to get in a car with me. I took lessons, my theory and driving test again and understood why I was nervous. I was hooked then and enjoyed driving again. My drive is in helping others face barriers, look at ways to manage them and use those strengths in driving.
